This past week SCU hosted a spectacular Fusion Festival across three campuses, an event that brought together students, faculty, and community members for an exciting celebration of cultural diversity and inclusivity. With a fantastic array of cultural performances, food, activities, and games, the Lismore festival held on Wednesday 19th March was held to recognize not only the beautiful mix of cultures within our university community but also honour important observances like International Women’s Day, Harmony Week, and Neurodiversity Week alongside it. Best of all? It was completely free!
A World of FlavoUrs: Free Food for All
One of the festival's biggest draws was the delicious selection of international cuisine available to attendees. The food stalls, manned by local community groups, businesses and volunteers, offered a vibrant menu featuring flavours from around the world. Guests lined up for servings of savory curry and crispy spring rolls, with many opting for sushi as a fresh and tasty alternative. For dessert, there was something for everyone, from the rich, velvety tiramisu to delightful mini cupcakes. The sweet treats didn't stop there—fortune cookies from LEXSA brought an element of fun and surprise to the experience, offering messages of encouragement and fortune for all.
Engaging Performances and Dances
The Fusion Festival also featured a stunning line-up of cultural performances that showcased the rich traditions and artistry of students, staff and community members from diverse backgrounds. From traditional folk dances to modern performances, the stage was alive with colour, energy, and talent. The dances were a powerful reminder of how cultural expression can transcend boundaries and bring people together in the spirit of joy and unity.
One standout performance was a collection of Aboriginal dances, a series of hip-hop routines, a classical Sri Lankan dance, Japanese taiko drumming, some mesmerising Latin, followed by a vibrant Belly Dance routine that left the crowd cheering for more. These performances not only entertained but also gave attendees a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the dancers and join in with some of the moves, making it a truly immersive experience.
Fun Activities and Interactive Games
The festival wasn't just about watching performances—it was also an opportunity to get involved! There were plenty of activities and games for everyone to enjoy. Students and families had fun playing the Carrom Board game, a classic Indian indoor game that requires skill and strategy. Many others enjoyed hair braiding and getting inked-up with henna tattoos, each intricate design telling a unique story and adding a personal touch to the festival experience.
To top it off, attendees had the chance to reflect on their personal goals and aspirations with a vision board activity. As part of the celebration of International Women's Day, participants created a collective vision board filled with images, quotes, and inspirations that represented their dreams and ambitions for all women in 2025. It was a beautiful way to empower individuals, particularly women, to visualize and pursue collective future goals, while fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
Recognizing Important Causes
This year, the Fusion Festival also served as a platform to recognize two significant causes: Neurodiversity Week and Harmony Week. Neurodiversity Week highlighted the importance of inclusivity for individuals with neurological differences, fostering understanding, acceptance, and support for those who may experience the world in a unique way. The festival included informational booths and discussions by Headspace on how to create more inclusive environments for neurodiverse individuals, making it a great opportunity for attendees to learn and grow.
Additionally, Harmony Week celebrated the diverse cultures that make up the vibrant tapestry of our university community.
Harmony Week encouraged dialogue and appreciation for the differences that make us stronger as a community. It was a beautiful reminder that unity lies in diversity and that together, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious world.
